Welcome to PWT's Electrical Section
We have a range of BEP panels to
suit everyones needs.
From a baby panel with just three switches to the ones
you see below which cater for almost everything.
On this page you will also find individual amp and
volt meters, shunts, battery switches, voltage sensitive
relays, terminal studs and other electrical toys.
========================================
Marty's note: When I first
looked at these panels, I said, jeez, they're not cheap.
Then, when I worked it all out, cost of circuit breakers, making
a mounting for them,
the wiring, the connections, the buss bars etc etc, I thought, jeez,
they're not so bad
after all. Add to that the professional finish they give to your
electrical installation and
the time you save putting the whole shebang in place and they start
to look pretty cheap.
|
...Features of BEP boards are.
Analogue meters - 2.5% of full scale
accuracy
Durable black powder coated marine grade aluminium
base panel
Marine quality, magnetic, hydraulic, UL listed trip
free breakers
Green LED back lighting for meters and labels

additional safety
|

For those who prefer the more accurate
digital meter.
..Features are the same as other
panels +
DC digital meters - 200 mV sensitivity, 1% accuracy including
alarms. ..12mm high numerals. (Even I can read that). |

Okay, for those of you who want
to muck around making your own switchboard
panel, here are some of the items you may need - BEP Circuit Breakers.

100 amps.
Strong, positive bolt connections ensure a good contact.
|
Carlingswitch® magnetic circuit breakers are
current sensing devices employing a time proven hydraulic magnetic
design. They are temperature stable and the hydraulic-magnetic
sensing mechanism reacts only to changes of current. There is
no warm up or cool down period to slow response. VDE approved
and UL recognised. |
 |
Heavy Duty Circuit Breakers - Bussman®:
Single pole thermal type switchable reset circuit breakers.
Typically used in auxiliary and accessory circuits. Sealed for
engine compartment and bilge area applications. Visual indicator
of tripped condition.
Specification:
30VDC, 3000 amp interrupt capacity
-32ºC to 82ºC operating temperature
Complies with SAEJ1625
|
|
| Marty's note: We also
carry auto reset circuit breakers for the same price as the
single pole "B" series, $33.00, but, personally, I
would not use them on my boat. On land in a tin shed, fine,
but think about this. A circuit breaker is not there to protect
your batteries from your solar panels, wind generator, whatever,
it is there to protect those items and your wiring in the event
your batteries having a problem. If a circuit breaker trips,
it trips for a reason. So, assuming it was correctly sized in
the first place, do you really want it cutting back in automatically
to have another go at burning your beautiful GRP hull to the
waterline while your out enjoying yourself at the yacht club?
I reckon I'd prefer it to stay tripped until I get back. |
Marty's
note:
I've seen so many of those cheap, chincy, battery switches fail
that I gave up on them on my own boat. They either burn out
or just fall apart. So, when you get seriously fed up of the
rubbish, this is what you get. BEP switches, buy it once and
you've got it for ever. On land based installations it is a
requirement that a double pole switch, (switch/circuit breaker
in fact) be installed that isolates both positive and negative
terminals, same goes for charter boats. It is a good idea. |

Battery Management Systems with VSR in 3 configurations.:
Pre-assembled module with solid links and application labels
combining three 701 Mini Battery Master Switches with a 100
amp Voltage Sensitive Relay. This system is an ideal replacement
for an existing four position battery selector switch, easily
connected to the existing wires, to provide a fully automatic
battery management system. Provides for isolation of start
and house batteries independently with the ability to emergency
parallel supply from both. The VSR will automatically prioritise
the charging of the start battery. When the engine is first
started the relay is open and remains open until the start
battery has reached a preset 13.7 volt. At the rated voltage,
the relay closes providing charge to both batteries. When
the voltage drops below 12.8 volt the VSR disengages, separating
the batteries. This system eliminates the possibility of draining
the start battery and protects electronics powered by the
house battery from harmful engine starting spikes. Available
in horizontal, vertical or square configuration. An optional
recessed mounting plate is also available.

Battery Distribution Cluster (1 eng. 2 bat.):
Pre-wired module combining 701-S Mini Battery Selector Switch
and a dual sensing Voltage Sensitive Relay. With the selector
switch in position 1, it becomes the sensing battery for the
VSR. When the engine is first started the relay is open and
remains open until the selected battery reaches a preset 13.7
volt. The relay closes at the rated voltage providing charge
to both batteries. When the selected battery voltage drops
below 12.8 volt, the VSR disengages, separating the batteries
and ensuring that battery 1 is not discharged by house loads.
When the selector switch is in position 2, this becomes the
sensing battery and the reciprocal occurs. When the selector
switch is in the both position the VSR is inactive and the
charge and load is distributed evenly between the batteries.
With this system the loads are run off the same battery as
the engine starting battery..

BEP Battery Dist. Cluster & VSR:
This system is designed to provide automatic battery management
for twin outboard installations using outboards without AUX
outputs. It is a pre-assembled module with solid links and
application labels. Provides independent isolation of port
start, starboard start and house batteries with the ability
to emergency parallel both starting batteries, combined with
a 100 amp VSR connected to each engine. It will control the
port engine to charge the port start battery first and then
the house battery when the port start battery is fully charged
(refer 113646, for operation of VSR). It will also control
the starboard engine to charge the starboard start battery
first and then charge the house battery when the starboard
start battery is fully charged, giving a combined charge from
both engines to the house battery until the voltage regulators
of both engines control the charge. It will also allow the
house battery to be charged if running on one engine.

BEP VSR: Voltage Sensitive Relay:
The Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) allows two batteries to
be charged at the same time. It will automatically prioritise
the charging of the start battery in twin battery systems.
When the engine is first started the relay is open and remains
open until the start battery has reached a preset 13.7 volts
for 12 volt systems and 27.4 volts for 24 volt systems. At
the rated voltage the relay closes providing charge to both
batteries (start and house). When the voltage drops below
12.8 volts (when the engine is stopped), the VSR disengages,
separating the batteries. This system eliminates the possibility
of draining the start battery and protects electronics powered
by the house battery from harmful engine starting spikes.
A VSR has no voltage drop as opposed to conventional charge
diode isolators. Surface mounted, 5mm roundhead screws.
A dual sensing VSR is also available. This model allows the
unit to sense the voltage of both batteries that it is connected
between. If either battery is receiving a charge, the VSR
will activate, parallelling the two battery banks. It is designed
for applications where a battery charger or second charging
source is connected into the house battery.
Marty's Note: I have fallen in love
with the VSR, especially the dual direction model. If the
engine has brought the engine battery up, it will then charge
your house bank. If your wind/solar system has charged your
house bank, it will then charge your engine battery. And it's
all automatic. What more can you ask for?

Heavy Duty VSR Voltage Sensitive
Relay:
A VSR designed for larger systems with all of the features of
the 100 amp models, with the added benefit of enabling push
button control from the steering station to parallel two batteries
in the event of a low battery upon starting. The unit is dual
sensing allowing it to sense the start batteries and the house
batteries enabling a single output battery charger to be connected
to the house batteries. This parallels the start batteries when
the house reaches 13.7 volts. The parallelling function can
be operated via a momentary button on the dash. Pushing the
button will parallel the two batteries for a period of ten minutes,
then revert to standard VSR mode. If the preset 13.7 volts has
been reached it will continue to charge both batteries, if 13.7
volts has not been reached, it will prioritise the charging
to the start battery only until the starting battery has reached
this potential, whereupon it will revert to charging the two
batteries together. When engines are restarted next time the
VSR will have reverted to it's normal mode i.e., starting from
the dedicated start battery only. The unit may also be used
as a parallelling solenoid by disengaging the voltage sensitive
function. There is also a manual control switch built in to
select Off - On (AUTO) or Battery Parallel (ON).

Marty's note:
In practice, on any ocean going vessel where the salt environment
is at it corrosive best, I have found glass fuses to be less
than desirable. The ends do corrode and maintaining a good connection
means coating the fuses and regular maintenance. Cheap adn cheerful
but, in my opinion, not for the serious ocean going vessel. |

Marty's note:
I have been using this stuff
on my boat and in the workshop for years.
When it comes to closing off those swage ends on the lifelines,
nothing comes much better than this. And when it comes to sealing
that solder joint on your wiring, forget the standard insulation
tape, it simply doesn't cut it
in a marine environment. It ain't cheap but then you don't normally
use a lot of it and, the fact is, once it is in place, it won't
fall off as some of the cheaper tapes will do, you'll need to
cut it off. We all know that duct tape is invaluable on a boat,
well here's another indispensible item. Do it once, do it right,
then forget it. |
